Hiring a borer specialist in Auckland

What does a borer inspection involve?

A borer inspection looks for exit holes, frass (fine powder) and soft or crumbling timber, usually in the subfloor and ceiling cavity, and tries to judge whether the activity is current or old. Ask whether you will get a written report with photos and whether the inspection fee is credited if you go ahead with treatment, as some businesses state.

Is there a standard for borer inspections in New Zealand?

New Zealand has no dedicated timber-pest inspection standard. A pre-purchase building inspection under NZS 4306 is a visual check and may note borer, but it is not a borer assessment. Buyers of older timber houses sometimes book a separate borer inspection for that reason.

Does every borer hole need treating?

Not always. Old holes can remain long after a colony has died out. Fresh frass, clean-edged holes and adult beetles in late spring and summer point to current activity. A specialist should explain which signs led to their recommendation, and whether badly damaged timber needs replacing by a builder rather than treating.

What if the insect is not common house borer?

Most Auckland house borer is Anobium punctatum, but some timber pests are notifiable. If a specialist suspects an exotic species, such as drywood termites or an unfamiliar beetle, it should be reported to the Ministry for Primary Industries on 0800 80 99 66 rather than treated privately.
