What should a garage door service include?

A service usually covers checking and adjusting spring tension, inspecting cables, rollers, hinges and tracks, lubricating moving parts, and testing the opener's safety reverse and any photo-eye beams. Ask for a written list of what was checked and replaced, and whether parts and labour carry a warranty.

Can garage door springs be replaced by a homeowner?

Garage door springs hold a lot of stored energy, and a spring or cable that releases under tension can cause serious injury. Spring replacement and adjustment are jobs for a garage door technician. Homeowners can safely keep the tracks clear, test the auto-reverse and report noises or sagging early.

Repair or replace: how do you decide?

A door with sound panels usually only needs parts: springs, cables, rollers or an opener. Replacement makes more sense when panels are damaged or rusted, parts for an older door are no longer made, or the owner wants insulation or a quieter opener. Ask for both options in writing when a business suggests replacement.
